Handcrafted Matcha Chawans to Elevate Your Matcha Experience

From the quality of the tea itself to the tools used to prepare it, each detail contributes to a moment of intention and appreciation. Our latest collaboration with Matchawell, a Los Angeles-based brand dedicated to high-quality matcha, embraces this philosophy through the creation of two handcrafted chawans with spout, designed to complement different approaches to matcha preparation.

Ellie, the founder of Matchawell, approached us with the idea of crafting unique matcha chawans that would elevate the ritual for her customers. Together, we designed two distinct pieces that merge tradition with modern sensibilities, ensuring that each cup of matcha is prepared with both beauty and function in mind.

The chawan matcha bowls are made from a dark stoneware clay with a deep chocolate-like hue, chosen for its durability and refined aesthetic. Each matcha bowl is individually hand-thrown on the wheel, glazed in a matte black finish, and delicately hand-carved. The carved detailing not only enhances the contemporary design but also gives each piece its own distinctive charm. This attention to detail ensures that every chawan bowl feels unique, inviting a personal connection between the user and their daily ritual.

Understanding the diverse needs of Matchawell’s community, we designed two versions of the chawan matcha. One is tailored for those who enjoy the traditional matcha preparation method, using a bamboo whisk to achieve a smooth, frothy consistency. The second is designed for those who prefer the convenience of an electric frother, offering a slightly adapted shape to accommodate this modern approach. Both versions preserve the essence of craftsmanship, allowing matcha enthusiasts to engage with their practice in a way that suits their lifestyle.

By blending artisanal techniques with a thoughtful approach to functionality, these chawans serve as more than just vessels for matcha—they become a tangible part of the ritual itself. Whether through the rhythmic motion of whisking or the gentle hum of an electric frother, the experience of preparing matcha is enriched by the presence of an object crafted with care and intention.
